What is NB-Fi?

NB-Fi (Narrow Band Fidelity) is an open LPWAN (Low-Power Wide-Area Network) protocol designed for Internet of Things (IoT), machine-to-machine (M2M), and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications. Developed by WAVIoT, NB-Fi operates in the unlicensed ISM (Industrial, Scientific, and Medical) radio band and supports secure bidirectional communication. This technology is particularly suited for applications requiring long-range data transmission, energy efficiency, and robust performance in challenging environments.

Key Features of NB-Fi

  1. Long-Range Communication: NB-Fi supports data transmission over distances up to 10 km in dense urban areas and up to 30 km in rural areas.
  2. Energy Efficiency: Designed for low power consumption, NB-Fi devices can operate on battery power for up to 10 years, making it ideal for applications where long battery life is crucial.
  3. High Receiver Sensitivity: NB-Fi transceivers have a high receiver sensitivity, down to -148 dBm at a 50 bps data rate, which allows for effective communication even in noisy environments.
  4. Secure Communication: The protocol uses AES-256 encryption to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of data transmitted between devices and the base station.
  5. Scalability: NB-Fi can support up to 4.3 billion devices in a single network, using a 32-bit ID for each device. This scalability is achieved without using IP addressing, optimizing the payload for small data packets.
  6. Open Standard: NB-Fi is an open standard with disclosed message formats and technical data, allowing manufacturers to produce compatible IoT devices.

Technical Specifications

  • Modulation Technique: DBPSK (Differential Binary Phase Shift Keying)
  • Data Rates: 50, 400, 3200, 25600 bps
  • Channel Separation: Time and Frequency
  • Maximum Receiver Sensitivity: -148 dBm (for 50 bps)
  • Encryption Algorithm: AES-256 or other symmetric block cipher algorithms with a 256-bit encryption key
  • Payload for One NB-Fi Packet: 8 bytes
  • Network Capacity: 4.3 billion devices

Applications of NB-Fi

NB-Fi is versatile and can be used in various applications across different industries:

  1. Smart Grids and Utilities: NB-Fi is used in advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and smart grid systems for efficient power transmission, utility supply management, and energy services.
  2. Smart Cities: The technology supports IoT solutions for smart cities, enabling municipalities to monitor events, collect and analyze data, and optimize resource consumption.
  3. Industrial Automation: NB-Fi facilitates the development of end-to-end IIoT applications, helping businesses implement efficient solutions for industrial automation.
  4. Smart Farming: In agriculture, NB-Fi supports smart farming systems for data collection from sensors (e.g., soil moisture, humidity, temperature) and automation of irrigation systems.
  5. Monitoring and Security: NB-Fi is used for remote monitoring of transportation and storage conditions, asset tracking, and preventing product theft in supply chains.

Comparison with Other LPWAN Technologies

NB-Fi stands out among other LPWAN technologies due to its focus on energy efficiency, long-range communication, and secure bidirectional data transmission. Unlike wideband systems, which occupy larger frequency bands, NB-Fi uses narrowband channels, allowing for efficient use of the radio frequency spectrum and high noise immunity. This makes NB-Fi particularly suitable for applications requiring reliable communication over long distances with minimal power consumption.

In summary, NB-Fi is a robust and scalable LPWAN protocol that offers secure, long-range, and energy-efficient communication for a wide range of IoT applications. Its open standard nature and high receiver sensitivity make it a versatile choice for industries looking to implement IoT solutions in challenging environments.
